IDSF DanceSport Events Big Hit On US TV

The first IDSF/IMG DanceSport event, the 1998 US Open Latin Championship, held in Boston in May was a runaway success.  It was televised all over America on the NBC Network and received such good ratings that NBC has immediately requested for another DanceSport event in the USA.

The second North American DanceSport competition produced as part of the Joint Venture between IDSF and IMG was again organised in Boston, Massachusetts in early November.  This time the competition included both latin-american and standard events.

Both events were again recorded by NBC.  The latin-american event is scheduled to be shown on Boxing Day, 26 December 1998.  The Standard event was filmed by NBC for future showing at a date to be announced.

For these events, DanceSport athletes from the Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Italy, Lithuania, Slovenia, South Africa, Switzerland and the USA had been invited to compete.  All but two of these couples are National Amateur Champions and most of them are at the top of the IDSF World Ranking Lists.

The standard event included 1998 IDSF World Standard Champions William Pino and Alessandra Bucciarelli, who won their title in October in Tokyo.  The latin-american event included Michael Wentink and Beata, and Matthew and Nicole Cuttler among others.

The couples competed for a total of US$50,000 in prize money, with the winner in each discipline receiving US$10,000.  The television programme was hosted by Vanessa Williams and Rick Valenzuela (stars of the movie Dance With Me).
